They measured 14 infant sleep machines at maximum volume at 30, 100 and 200 cm. All 14 exceeded 50 A-weighted decibels at 30 cm - described in the paper as the recommended noise limit for infants in hospital nurseries - and three of the 14 exceeded 85 A-weighted decibels, a level the authors note would exceed adult occupational accumulated-noise limits if played for more than eight hours. Their recommendations are to place the machine as far from the infant as possible, play at a low volume, and limit the duration of use. One thing we will not do is repeat the very common claim that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a specific seven-foot distance: we could not verify that number against an AAP page, and every version of it we traced led back to a secondary source or to a manufacturer's own marketing. The 200 cm - about six and a half feet - in the study above is a measurement distance, and the study's own instruction is simply as far away as possible.
